Brief Summary and moving on
House on Red Corner · 2009-01-07
Ok,without any further delay, Nathan’s summary of a two month visit to Australia.
First, I’ll have to say that the entire experience has been wonderful and remarkable for our family and for myself it has cast a great deal of light onto my life and the environment which I dwell. It was only halfway through our visit that it was highlighted in my mind that we live in Cambridge, Ma. That is to say, Cambridge, Ma is our home. Yes, there are cheaper ways to find out where you live; most people just wake up in the morning and look around; but this experience showed us, or at least me, that we belong where we live, therefore we are home when in Cambridge- for now. Observations that aided this position depended upon the people we met or relationships which we exercised/developed/destroyed on our trip.
First thing I noticed was that they have good coffee in Australia, none of that terrible drip coffee that is so pervasive in the US. Every single place for you to buy a cup of coffee requires you to tell them how you would like it made, there is no such thing as a regular cup of coffee, it’s all brewed with an espresso machine, all of it. Ah! the taste of civilization!
So what was my favorite part? Queensland, and more specifically the Daintree Rainforest all the thousands of animals that live only in that place on the earth was wonderful and remarkable. The best was the morning after we got lost and slept in a rented cabin at a hideaway and woke up at 5 AM to the bird and bug chorus performing their glorious symphony. Feeding a kangaroo and wallabies in an animal exhibit also happened in Queensland.
I also was exposed to the culture of the land through the people (mentioned above) that we interacted with. Cricket is an elegant sport full of tradition and I think I have fallen in love with it. Australia also calls it their national pasttime.
Driving on the left, while not really that unusual, really required exercising a different part of the brain but also I had to keep repeating “I am the only one to whom this is strange.” Lessons in acceptance, hmmm? People are really nice in Australia, and very friendly, particularly with an infant in the party.
The beaches are completely gorgeous, whether in the Indian or Pacific Oceans, they were absolutely amazing. Some of them were dangerous, Stingers, Crocodiles, and Sharks, but for the most part nice nice nice nice.
Travel is also very easy to do in Australia. I bought a didgeridoo, ok ok ok TheWife bought one for me, the airlines didn’t blink at letting me carry it into the cabin. There was a different story in the US, at least they didn’t destroy it when flying from LAX to Logan.
Moving on…..
TheBubster will be starting preschool on Monday, and boy oh boy is she excited.
