To those missing kids

A cat and a bear
wait, it’s not a bear
A penguin
no, I’m so sorry
I must be confused
for it is a bear after all
wearing a hat that forces
it to appear to be a penguin
and for some reason
yet to be deduced
the cat is wearing
a gown fit for a royal tea
together, they sit on my pillow
taunting me
mocking me
reminding me
that my tears need to flow
out of my face
staining my sheets
ruining my sleep
until I have fitful dreams
of lonely sad children
who refuse to play in the grounds
without a hand being offered
to hold them, tenderly
little kisses on cheeks
or snowdrops pushing through icy crusts
and holding promises
in their dainty little hands
while I cry in the closet
